E-identity as a two sided market: the business case will drive adoption, not the technology

On behalf of the Dutch ministry of Economic Affairs Innopay has investigated the possibilities to accelerate the adoption of e-identity services by learning from other two sided markets and platform industries such as (e-)payments and (e-)invoicing.

With a foreword by the Minister of Economic Affairs, Maria van der Hoeven, the report describes a two sided market approach to e-identity. By clearly focusing on the distinct needs of both sides of the e-identity market (end users and relying parties), a network of providers can provide value to both sides of the market. By providing the right functionalities, setting right pricing and attracting the users, an exponentially growing market could result, while maintaining diversity in participants, solutions and technologies. Inclusivity -rather than exclusivity- becomes the norm.

This approach can unite all initiatives in today's scattered market, and fuel further adoption of e-services.
